A group of four Geology undergrauate and graduate students from the School of Geosciences won the 2023 North America Region competition of the Imperial Barrel Award (IBA).

Every year, teams of geoscience students from universities around the world compete in the American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG) Imperial Barrel Award. The IBA teams analyze real industry data to understand their potential for energy resources, and how to extract them suistainably.

At the end of eight weeks, the teams present their findings to a panel of industry expert at the regional competition. The judges select the winning team on the basis of the technical quality, clarity and originality of presentation.

This year, the North America Region included teams from across the United States and Canada. The UL Lafayette team has been advised by Dr. Davide Oppo (faculty advisor), and Mary Brussard and Brian Brennan (industry advisors).

The UL Lafayette IBA team will now move on to the international phase of the program, competing against the winning teams from around the world.

Wish them luck!
