Graduate Program Information Page

The Department of Geology offers a graduate program leading to the M.S. degree. Interests among faculty members make study and research available in most of the major fields of the geological sciences. Specialization in carbonate and evaporite petrology, environmental geology, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, igneous petrology, micropaleontology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, geomagnetism, and subsurface geology is possible. Lafayette is a major center for the petroleum industry, so petroleum related thesis topics are commonly undertaken. Additionally, many students obtain part-time work in the industry: this provides them with financial support and with valuable professional experience. Increasing emphasis on environmental geology in southern Louisiana has led to opportunities for thesis work and employment in this field.

Financial Aid
Students with exceptional academic records are encouraged to seek financial aid from outside sources, such as the National Science Foundation. Check our listing. For those not securing such assistance, the department offers a number of teaching assistantships, which include a salary of up to $6,500 and a waiver of tuition and most fees. Board of Regents’ Fellowships administered by the department include a $12,500 pa. Stipend and most fees waived. There are also University fellowships, with stipends of $7,500 each, which are designed for qualified minority student applicants to Graduate School. Research assistantships commonly are available and normally cover the cost of thesis research. Stipends for research assistantships vary with the funding agency. Departmental scholarships are also available to help defray the cost of tuition or thesis research.
