The American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation

Deadline: January 31

The purpose of the AAPG Foundation's Grants-in-Aid program is to foster research in the geosciences. Grants are made to provide financial assistance to graduate students (currently enrolled in Masters or Ph.D. programs) whose thesis research has application to the search for and development of petroleum and energy-mineral resources, and/or to related environmental geology issues.

Grants are based on merit, and in part, on the financial needs of the applicant. Although the focus of the program is the support of qualified candidates for Masters or equivalent degrees, qualified doctoral candidates are also encouraged to apply.

Factors weighed in selecting successful applicants include: the qualifications of an applicant as indicated by past performance; originality and imagination of the proposed project; support of the department in which the work is being done; and perceived significance of the project to petroleum, energy minerals and related environmental geology.

Grants range from $500 to $2,000 and are to be applied to expenses directly related to the student's thesis work, such as field work, laboratory analyses, etc. Funds are NOT to be used for capital equipment, conferences, salaries, tuition, room and board during the school year. Further details are included on the current application form.

SEG Foundation Scholarship Program

Deadline: March 1

In 1959 the Society of Exploration Geophysicists began a program of encouraging the establishment of scholarship funds by companies and individuals engaged or interested in the field of geophysics. SEG saw the need for a more appropriate organization and caused the SEG Foundation to be organized. In 1963 the Foundation's activities were expanded to include grants-in-aid.

The Number of Scholarships available depends chiefly upon the number of sponsors and the amounts they contribute. For the 2002-2003 academic year, the Foundation awarded 118 scholarships totaling $211,750. This represented 71 renewals of scholarships to students on a continuing basis and 47 scholarships to new recipients receiving grants for the first time. In addition to approximately $100,000 available for general scholarships, sponsored scholarships are available to students who meet certain specific criteria. The G.W. Hohmann undergraduate and graduate awards are restricted to students whose course of study is directed toward a degree in geophysics with an emphasis on mining or electrical methods. The Lucien LaCoste award ($10,000) is restricted to a graduate student whose degree is in geophysics with a special emphasis on gravity exploration. The Robert E. Sheriff award ($12,000) and the Margaret S. Sheriff award ($6,000) were recently established to enable a non-U.S. resident to study geophysics at the graduate level at the University of Houston.

Applications and Supporting Documents Must Be Received by March 1 of the year in which the award is made. Forms may be downloaded from the SEG Web site. Contact the

GCAGS STUDENT GRANT PROGRAM

Deadline: February 28

The GCAGS is sponsoring a program of financial aid for worthy college and university geoscience students pursuing research in the Gulf Coast region. Research projects concerning any of the following fields of study related to the Gulf Coast region are eligible to be considered for grants: geology, geophysics, energy and mineral resources, geohydrology, environmental geology, and paleontology. Also eligible are general geoscience topics with direct, well-explained application to the Gulf Coast region. Research projects that qualify for consideration include graduate level thesis or dissertation projects for the Master's or Doctoral degrees or special studies of undergraduates under the direct supervision of a faculty member.
Requests for support should not exceed $1,500, although the itemized budget for the research project may indicate a greater expenditure. Each proposal should clearly describe how the research project relates to an aspect of the geology of the Gulf Coast region.

National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships

Deadline: Early November

The National Science Foundation is an important funding resource for many institutions. Among the NSF programs of interest to graduate students is the Graduate Research Fellowship Awards. The NSF seeks to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, mathematics, and engineering in the United States and to reinforce its diversity. The NSF awards approximately 900 new three-year Graduate Research Fellowships in March of each year.

These three-year fellowships provide $27,500 stipends and a cost-of-education allowance of $10,500 per year. A $1000 International Research Travel Allowance is also available. Similar Minority Graduate Fellowships are also available. More information and application forms can be obtained at: National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship or

AGI Minority Geoscience Student Scholarships

Deadline: March 1

Primary Sponsor: American Geological Institute The broad goal for this program is to maintain and increase incrementally the number of underrepresented ethnic-minority students in the geosciences, including the geoscience subdisciplines of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, meteorology, physical oceanography, planetary geology, or earth-science education. Since employment opportunities in the geosciences increase significantly for those who hold graduate degrees, the program targets the increased matriculation of minority students in advanced-degree programs. This program is supported by funding from AGI Corporate Associates and Member Society support.

If you are a geoscience graduate student or are applying for an advanced degree in geoscience (M.A., M.S., or Ph.D.) during the 2000-20001 academic year, you can review and print a copy of the AGI Minority Geoscience Scholarship application at http://www.agiweb.org/mpp/index.html.
