The Geology Department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, provides an outstanding environment for studies of the materials of Earth as revealed by their composition, structure, and history. Interests among faculty members make study and research available in most of the major fields of the geological sciences. Specialization in carbonate and evaporite petrology, environmental geology, geochemistry, geophysics, geomagnetism, hydrogeology, igneous petrology, micropaleontology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, and subsurface geology is possible. Lafayette is a major center for the petroleum industry, so petroleum related research topics are commonly undertaken. The Department has 7 full-time faculty members and several Adjunct Faculty. Degree Programs: The Geology Department offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and the Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in Geology. Download information page here (requires Acrobat Reader). In the future, geology students might be able to participate in the planned interdisciplinary Certificate Program in Geographic Information Science (GIS) through the Regional Application Center. Research: Our faculty, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students pursue field, laboratory, experimental, and modeling studies of geological and environmental problems around the world (please see faculty web pages and research facilities). The department's excellent facilities support a range of methods including field studies, carbonate and evaporite petrology, environmental geology, geochemistry, geophysics, geomagnetism, hydrogeology, igneous petrology, micropaleontology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, subsurface geology, computation, and modeling. Location: The Department of Geology is located in the Engineering Building (Madison Hall) on the UL Lafayette Campus. Business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (Central), Monday through Friday; phone: (337) 482-6468; FAX: (337) 482-5723 Correspondence may be sent to: Department of Geology University of Lousiana at Lafayette PO Box 44530 Lafayette, LA 70504 USA Email: geology@louisiana.edu Phone: 337-482-6468 Fax: 337-482-5723 |
