Mission Statement
To provide a professional learning experience for Geology students that is not available through formal courses at UL-Lafayette; to supply local businesses with a pool of developing talent; to support the mission of the Geology Department in training students for meaningful employment.
 
INTRODUCTION
The Geology internships are highly individualized and consider the student’s background, experience, career goals, and academic program, as well as the opportunities offered by participating Corporate Sponsors. Internships provide benefits for students, Sponsors, and the Geology Department. Students gain valuable professional experience and improve their understanding of employment possibilities; Sponsors get a motivated and educated employee; department and faculty maintain contact with industry.
The intent of these guidelines is to insure fairness to students in terms of departmental expectations and grading in addition to outlining requirements for Corporate Sponsors.
 
ELIGIBILITY
In order to enroll in the Internship, the student must be a Geology graduate student or undergraduate major with upper division standing and a minimum 2.5 GPA. Prior approval of both the Intern Advisor and the Sponsor at the site is necessary.
 
CREDIT

A student is allowed to enroll for either two (2) or three (3) credits per semester up to a maximum of six (6) credits; a minimum of three (3) hours/ week of work with the Sponsor is required for each hour of credit received.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES are outlined below

I. Student Intern

A. Semester prior to Internship:
1. Meet with Department Coordinator and Faculty Member who will be the Intern
Advisor to discuss the internship, eligibility, time requirements, expectations,
regulations, and options for internship program site.

2. Select site, request appointment, and meet with Sponsor to discuss student’s internship, clarify details, and finalize requirements.
3. Obtain the signatures of the Intern Advisor and Sponsor on the Memorandum of Understanding.
4. Return the completed and signed internship packet to the Department Coordinator for final approval and signature.
5. Register for the class.

B. Semester of Internship:
1. Complete all work in a professional manner. This includes, but is not limited to,
dressing in an acceptable manner, doing all work in a timely and punctual fashion, observing all safety and confidentiality requirements of the company, and performing to the best level possible.

2. Complete the required planned exercises and assignments in sequential order in the
time schedule determined by Student Intern, Sponsor, and Intern Advisor which
includes:

a. Completing the required minimum number of hours.
b. Generating a log of professional weekly summaries of activities, new knowledge,
problems, and suggestions.
c. Developing a professional, updated resume (to include internship), a copy of which is due on the first day of finals.
d. Producing a Final Report which is a comprehensive document including: overall knowledge gained, accomplishments and problems, suggestions for possible improvements, evaluation of short-term goals, and assessment of reaching long-term goals. A suggested Format of the Final Report is included in the Internship Packet.

3. Grade will be based on an evaluation of the following assignments:
a. Organization: Format of Final Report
b. Quality: Overall Report: syntax, spelling, grammar, etc.
c. Skills: Extent to which desired skills enhance practical experience
d. Congruence: Agreement between objectives and skills acquired
e. Activity logs: weekly logs or summaries of internship activities
f. Student rating: Student evaluation of the Sponsor
g. Sponsor rating: Sponsor evaluation of the student
h. Punctuality: Submission of proper forms (with signatures) and registration in
the internship in the semester before it begins:
Report submitted by due date (first day of finals).

II. Intern Advisor:

A. Semester prior to internship:
1. Each Intern Advisor is responsible for the student he/she is advising.

2. The Intern Advisor should discuss the basics of internships with the Student Intern and assure a proper understanding of requirements including:
a. Departmental regulations as outlined in the Internship Packet.
b. Choice of an appropriate Internship.
c. Final approval of Intern site.
d. Submittal of signed Internship Packet.
e. Registration in Internship.

3. Meet or speak with the Department Head for clarification and approval of Internship.

4. Submit signed and completed “Internship Packet” to the Departmental Head for final approval.

B. Semester of Internship:
1. Make at least one visit to the site with the Intern.
2. Maintain contact with the Sponsor to minimize potential problems.
3. Receive Sponsor rating of Student Intern.
4. Receive and grade Final Report from the Student Intern.
5. Submit Final Course Grade.
6. Approve termination of the participant from the Internship if conditions so warrant.

II. Corporate Sponsor:
A. Interview and approve Student Intern for the Internship Program.
B. Read and sign the Internship agreement prior to the beginning of the Internship.
C. Orient the Student Intern to the site and mentor the student on a regular (daily) basis.
D. Discuss, approve, provide and expose the Student Intern to the resources for planned experiences.
E. Treat the Intern as a professional and pay the minimum wage or more for the time spent working at the site.
F. Maintain contact with the Intern Advisor to discuss the Internship.
G. Conduct a mid-term evaluation of the Internship and discuss it thoroughly with the Intern Advisor and Student Intern.
H. Complete and mail the final evaluation of the Internship to the Intern Advisor by the first day of finals.


FORMAT OF Final Report: Undergraduates:
a) Title page (including title, name, and date)
b) Table of Contents (pages must be numbered)
c) Headings for information in the body of the report:

1) Description of Study:
- Description of organization
- Sponsor
- Location
- Tasks performed

2) Internship Objectives (long and short term)
- Relation of performed tasks to internship objectives
- Extent to which objectives were met

3) Skills acquired

4) Evaluation of experience
- likes/dislikes
- strengths/weaknesses

5) Recommendations to the Sponsor on Improving Operations

6) Problems encountered

7) Conclusions
d) Minimum of 10 typed, double-spaced, computer-generated text
 
Graduates: Students taking the course for graduate credit will be required to create a second document in addition to the one outlined above which relates the work experience to potential thesis topics or research objectives. This document will be similar to a thesis proposal (see departmental guidelines from graduate coordinator) and include the following:
a) Title page (as above)
b) Abstract
c) Previous work/Literature review
d) Nature and significance of problem
e) Objectives
f) Research plan
g) Products or components
h) References

Final Report is due on the First Day of Finals

Description of Course:
GEOL 405 (G). Geology Internship (2-3). Supervised work-study in the field of Geology. Fa, Sp, Su, Prereq: Permission of Instructor and Upper Division standing in Geology. May be repeated for up to a total of 6 cr.
