Road to Big Bend National Park

Tentative Itinerary

2 January, 2009
Load gear between 2 and 3 pm in Madison parking lot

3 January—Day 1
Departure: 8 am
Lafayette through Houston to San Antonio, Tx via I-10. Continue W on US 90 to Del Rio, TX Total mileage: ~550 mi.
Night: Motel 6 in Del Rio.

4 January—Day 2
Del Rio, TX, to Marthon on US 90; turn S on US 365 to Big Bend National Park. Total mileage: ~250 mi
Set up camp in Chisos Basin group campground (nights of 4 - 10 January). Introduction to field camp procedures and Big Bend National Park. Marathon Uplift and Trans-Pecos Provinces.

5 January—Day 3
Tour of Big Bend NP; Introduction to Field Camp; Overview of regional geology and stratigraphy

6 January—Day 4
Mapping Project—Blacktail Peak area map.

7 January—Day 5
Begin Tunnel area map and section: Measure stratigraphic section and begin mapping project; Project due: 5 pm January 29, 2007.

8 January—Day 6
Mapping Project—Tunnel area Day 2

9 January—Day 7
Measure section near Cerro Castellan and begin of mapping project; Project due 5 pm January 29, 2007.

10 January—Day 8
Finish mapping Project at Cerro Castellan.

11 January—Day 9
Close camp and travel from BBNP to San Antonio, TX, via US 90, 385, and I-10. Total mileage: ~300 mi
Laramide and Marathon orogenies; lithologies
Night: Travelodge San Antonio, TX.

12 January—Day 10
Return to Lafayette, LA, from San Antonio, TX, via I-10. Total mileage: ~400 mi
